‘A Medley of Miscreants’ – artwork by Nancy Farmer at ‘Frameus’ in Wells.
Following a highly successful exhibition in March of this year, local painter Nancy Farmer will be returning to ‘Frameus’ in Wells over the Christmas period, bringing (in pictorial form) her highly individual miscellany of monsters, magic, myth and mayhem. Original artwork, prints, cards and calendars will be available for sale.
Description:
‘A Medley of Miscreants’ is an exhibition that promises to dispel any ostentatiously cute cherubs and jolly, overstuffed Santas; replacing them with a festively decadent blend of colourful characters drawn both from Nancy’s own imagination; and superstition and legend at large. Such outlandish subject matter should not, however, be thought of as un-festive, claims Nancy: ‘My paintings, though full of demons and monsters, often celebrate the social aspects of their lives’ she explains, ‘those communal gatherings that are the soul of Christmas festivities everywhere. Also, quite a lot of drinking goes on in my pictures.’
Clearly, such artwork should not be approached without a sense of humour; and for those who prefer the light-hearted, a flock of fairies is promised. Even these, though, come with Nancy’s warning that they are ‘produced in a studio that also handles demons, and whilst every effort has been made to ensure the purity of these fairies, some small demons may remain’. ‘I also have some nice mermaids; though some of them are not so nice’, she adds. Certainly Nancy’s paintings seem fitted for dark evenings by the fire, just so long as one does not have to venture back out into the inky night.
Venue: 'Frameus', The Workshops, Market Street, Wells, BA5 2DS.
